We believe this will be the final update to the Digital Edition and we apologize for sending out so many versions so quickly. Thank you to those who pointed this out to us.

We're not sure what caused it, but we have verified that the error was not present in the print version we sent off, so no worries about it being in the physical book. This one fixed an issue on which was resulting in the map being low-resolution.

This networkstudy not only shows who was involved in propagating Wagner in Brussels, it also seeks to show in what way Wagner was being understood in Brussels. We'll be locking and charging the shipping through Backerkit this week. As it turns out, wagnerites in Brussels were French-speaking progressive bourgeois intellectuals who did not share the nationalist interests of their Flemish counterparts. As manager of this network, La Fontaine soon found came into contact with many wagnerites abroad and it seems that Brussels took the lead in the propagation of Wagnerian art. Many of its members contributed to the cultural life of the capital as singer, conductor, writer, politician or artist. The Wagner Society was led by the very industrious Henri La Fontaine, who was himself a socialst as well as a freemason. Wagnerism was a cultural subcurrent that spread amongst masonic, socialist en symbolist circles during the 1880s and 1890s. Years before that, wagnerites in that city had founded a Wagner Society that contributed greatly to the promotion of Wagner’s work amongst the French speaking elite in Brussels. Thanks to its opera house, La Monnaie, Brussels became, shortly after the composer’s death in 1883, one of the most important cities outside the German speaking world, where the opera’s of Richard Wagner were performed.
